About Jeffrey Campbell
Jeff was born in Laguna Beach California in 1942. He was a successful high school football coach and History teacher for 30 years. Jeff grew up in Santa Barbara California and learned to body surf from his lifeguard father when he was four years old. He shared a balsawood surfboard with a friend when he was 13 and payed for, bought, and rode his first fiberglass board at the age of 15. Jeff has a special feeling for the ocean and surfing is still his most treasured activity. Jeff began serious painting in watercolors and pastels around ten years ago and is self taught as well as mentored by two close friends. He owes much of his progress to Lucille Warnick of Medford Oregon who encouraged him to begin in plein air painting. For the past several years he has been mentored in oil painting by Michael Drury, a fine painter, outstanding teacher, and longtime friend. Jeff's love and never ending observations of the ocean is an obvious part of his work. "I try to portray that one moment that describes the conditions and currents and form of the ocean on that day, at that time, and on that beach" "Surfing all these years has given me a pointed understanding of the calm yet powerful moods of our ocean surf, beaches, and bluffs." Jeff lives in Santa Barbara with his wife Ruth. His children and grandchildren live in the area, and he spends a lot of time with them on the beach, after all, where would he rather be?
